The question is often asked, “What is the difference between happiness and joy?” Happiness is an emotion; it results from circumstances that bring pleasure. As circumstances change our emotions change, and happiness can quickly disappear. When the Buckeyes win, I’m happy. When they lose, I am not happy. Joy on the other hand is much deeper and not dependent on circumstances. It is a state of mind. It is a decision. Paul assured the Philipians that he will rejoice! He was making a decision. Paul encouraged the Thessalonians to “rejoice always” (1 Thes. 1:6). James told his audience to count it all joy when they face trials. I have not known many people who smile and are happy when they are experiencing a difficult time. Joy, however, is a condition we can experience even when we are not all that happy, because joy is rooted in a relationship with God. It is the assurance that regardless of your circumstances, that for those who love God, all things work together for good (Rom. 8:28). So, don’t worry, rejoice!
